Ash handling equipment to power plant in Russia

Berezovskaya coal-fired power plant, Sharypovo

Kopar received a major order for ash handling equipment to the Berezovskaya coal-fired power plant located in Sharypovo in south central Siberia in Russia. The plant is owned by E.ON, the German energy conglomerate. The deal is worth well over a million euros and is one of the largest Russian orders in the company’s history. It also was a significant breakthrough in Kopar’s recent actions to enter properly the vast Russian energy and power market.

Since E.ON established its presence in Russia in 2005, the company has acquired several power plants in various parts of the country. Most of them require a lot of modernization, and the Kopar deal in Berezovskaya is a part of the first step of the plant’s upgrading program at the boiler power unit number 3. The capacity of the plant is currently 1600 MW and after the changes it will be 2400 MW in 2015.

The Kopar delivery includes quite a number of equipment for handling both fly and bottom ash and slag. The plant accumulates 55 tph of ash. The Kopar equipment includes pneumatic conveyors, rotary feeders, air slides, pneumatic double flaps, bag filters, pipes and silos in addition to automation, instrumentation and power units. The installation is planned to start in April 2014. Kopar also supervises the installation and is responsible for commissioning and training.

A huge project


The project is as large as can be when the whole installation is changed to reflect the technical needs of a total revamp. Here are some considerably large sections of the project where Kopar is involved.

  • Evacuation and collection of ash from an electrostatic separator (ESP) into a collection bin under an electrostatic precipitator.
  • Kopar delivery: Rotary feeders, pneumatic double flaps, air slides.
  • Transporting ash mixed with crushed slag from collection bin under electrostatic precipitators to a storage silo with a transporting distance of 500m or to an ash sedimentation bin with a distance of 170m.
  • Kopar delivery: Collection bin, a bag filter system, 3 pneumatic conveyors, pipeline parts.
  • Discharge of ash from 4 bins of boiler convective mines on elevation level +36m to the conveyor for slag removal on level +1.7m.
  • Kopar delivery: Pneumatic double flaps with air boosters.
  • Transporting slag from the boiler slag bin into a collection bin with a distance of 160m as a part of the bottom ash handling system supplied by the Italian company Magaldi.
  • Kopar delivery: 2 pneumatic conveyors with pipelines to the collection bin.
  • Transporting ash from multi-cyclones to the collection bin with a distance of 120m with two separate lines.
  • Kopar delivery: Pneumatic double flaps, pipeline parts.

But this is not all. The conditions at the site also present certain challenges to the design, machinery and execution of the project. The climate is continental with absolute maximum temperatures between –46ºC and +37ºC. On top of this the region also is classified as seismic, so extreme conditions need to be taken into consideration.

The manufacturing of the equipment will occupy all Kopar units.
