The process of a pneumatic conveying system is simple and basically consists of a pressure vessel that pumps the materials (powders, granules or other dry bulk materials) via enclosed horizontal or vertical pipelines (conveying lines) by using compressed air. The key factor is to achieve it in the most efficient and reliable way. One of Kopar’s main advantages here is the fact we use low velocity, meaning a less wear of the pipelines.

Kopar’s pneumatic conveying systems can easily handle a wide range of different materials such as calcium carbonate, copper concentrate, talc, bentonite clay, kaolin clay, soda ash, limestone, sodium-benzoate, clay/carbon blend, gypsum, vanadium-pentoxide, dolocron, dicalcium phosphate, silica, TiO2, lead oxide, ammonia- sulfate and boric acid among others. Pneumatic conveying is also commonly used in food industry conveying all kind of granules or powders such as sugar, cacao, powdered milk, potato flour to mention a few.


  • From 1 t/h up to 150 t/h are easily conveyed with one line. More capacity is easily achievable by using parallels lines.
  • Pressure used is conveying is between 1 to 2 bars depending of the operation and of the material properties.
  • Conveying distances up to 1.000 m without intermediate stations are possible.
  • Fully automated operation due to electronic control.
  • The pneumatic system is always designed to meet the customer's needs.
  • In the design of pipelines requirements of the specific application are taken into account. The most appropriate materials are seleceted for pipeline components (Steel / Cast Basalt / Aluminium Oxide).
  • Receiving silos, filters and unloading stations after the conveying process can also be included in the scope of supply. 


Generally speaking, any dry bulk or small particle material can be conveyed using a pneumatic system. Materials that are not suitable for pneumatic conveying are the ones with large particle size, with high bulk density, and the extremely sticky materials, since they tend to build a coating on material contact surfaces and can eventually block the conveying line. It’s very important that particles are fine enough and without big lumps (90% smaller than 1mm), and moisture must be lower than 5%.
The conveying can take place as a multi-line-conveying-solution, where each pneumatic conveyor feeds the material to own pipeline. The other way of transporting is with single-line-conveying-solution meaning that several pneumatic conveyors are connected to the same conveying line. The single-line-solution is possible when transported capacities are rather small. The advantage of that kind of system is the saving in pipelines and in compressed air.

conveying methods

There are four main pneumatic conveying methods. These methods are dense phase, pulse dense phase, fluidized phase, and diluted phase. Selection between them depends on many parameters like the transported material, conveying distance, flow and the process in general. According to Kopar’s experience the most efficient method, in most of the cases, is the pulse dense phase, which consumes less energy and is more maintenance-friendly than the traditional pneumatic conveying (i.e. diluted phase).

The pulse dense phase conveying system operates in a batch mode. The material is split on batches by cutting the material flow coming out from the vessel to the conveying pipe with the use of an air pulse. The batch then conveys as a high-density pulse with low velocity (around 7 m/s) through the pipeline to the receiving silo. The system is easy to operate since it is fully automated and integrated with the plant’s control (DCS) system. It also avoids any disturbances in the flow, by making a complete cleaning of the pipeline periodically. If at any particular situation the pipeline is blocked or it is going to be blocked, then the system realizes it and cleans itself thus ensuring a continuous trouble-free material flow.

Kopar's Cupola Valve, is designed to open and close with a gas-tight pressure seal where abrasive materials are being conveyed. It is also equipped with a pressure switch that recognized the internal pressure of the inflatable seal and also a limit switch that indicates when the cupola is closed. The valve is capable of closing and sealing through static columns of material in most of the circumstances. This type of valve with an inflatable seal lasts much longer, especially when conveying abrasive materials.

Elbows, pipes, and COMPONENTS

Elbow and pipes are made of steel and can be reinforced by cast basalt or aluminum oxide.

Reinforcement reduces the need for replacement parts and lengthens the life of the system when used for very abrasive and difficult materials.
